Abstract

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a pathogenic bacterium resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics that can cause nosocomial infections. Healthcare workers are at high risk of becoming MRSA carriers due to frequent direct contact with patients and the hospital environment. Identification of MRSA carriers is important to determine potential sources of transmission and to support infection prevention policies in healthcare facilities. This study used a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach involving 19 healthcare workers from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Central Surgical Installation (IBS) at Mataram University Hospital. Samples were collected using nasal swabs, then cultured on nutrient agar media and identified through Gram staining, catalase, and coagulase tests. Isolates identified as Staphylococcus aureus were tested for resistance to cefoxitin, oxacillin, and linezolid using the disk diffusion method. Of the 19 samples examined, eight isolates of Staphylococcus aureus were obtained, and one isolate was identified as MRSA. The MRSA carrier was a female nurse with a working duration of less than 5 years and assigned to the Central Surgical Installation (IBS). The prevalence of MRSA carriage among healthcare workers at Mataram University Hospital was 5.3%. MRSA carriage was found among healthcare workers who were nurses (5.5%), female (7.7%), had a working period of < 5 years (12.5%), and worked in the Central Surgical Installation (IBS) unit (11.1%).
