Abstract

Appropriate pesticide use is essential for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in garlic cultivation. This study aimed to describe farmers’ characteristics, assess pesticide-use knowledge and IPM implementation, and analyze the relationships of educational attainment and pesticide-use knowledge with IPM implementation. Conducted in Sembalun District, East Lombok Regency, from July to August 2026, this quantitative descriptive study involved 72 garlic farmers selected from a population of 250 using the Slovin formula with a 10% margin of error. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank correlation. The results showed that 64 respondents (88.9%) had high pesticide-use knowledge, while 8 (11.1%) had moderate knowledge. IPM implementation was moderate among 46 respondents (63.9%) and high among 26 (36.1%). Pesticide-use knowledge was strongly and positively associated with IPM implementation (rₛ = 0.649, p < 0.001). Extension frequency was also strongly associated with pesticide-use knowledge (rₛ = 0.707) and IPM implementation (rₛ = 0.653). These findings highlight a gap between knowledge and practice, emphasizing the need for practical training and field-based extension to improve IPM implementation.
