Abstract

Student engagement in learning is a crucial indicator of successful teaching and learning processes, especially in English language learning, which emphasizes communication skills. However, initial observations revealed that students in Class X-3 of SMAN 1 Mataram tended to be passive in learning activities, particularly when speaking English. This research aims to enhance student engagement through the application of the Role Play learning model. The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in two cycles, each comprising the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 38 students from Class X-3. Data were collected through the observation of student engagement and analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods. The results showed a significant increase in student engagement across every observed aspect, including conveying ideas, asking questions, answering questions, giving directions, and helping peers. The overall engagement also improved, with the "Not Active" category decreasing from 44.73% in the pre-cycle to 0% in Cycle II, while the "Very Active" category increased from 15.78% to 31.57%. These findings prove that the Role Play model is effective in creating a more interactive and enjoyable learning atmosphere, successfully encouraging active student participation. Therefore, Role Play is a viable alternative learning strategy for teaching English in secondary schools.
